Former Manhattan-ite, current Queens resident here, looking to escape the city's high taxes, high rental prices, and lack of green space and apartment amenities. I'm in the market for a reasonably fun town in the area that is less than an hour from the city, preferably has a walkable downtown, and decent singles population. I'm planning to move into a luxury apartment in whatever town this is - fitness center, pool, etc. which will be amazing considering the plain 1-bedrooms I can afford in the city.
So far it seems like Montclair is a good bet, but I'm also curious about South Orange and Rutherford, and any other towns that might fit?
By the way, I was looking at Hoboken and JC at first, but the luxury apartments are $2,500+ which I don't really want to pay. I'd rather pay closer to $2,000 on rent and get myself a car so I can get out to the beach and hiking/biking on the weekends.
Also how is Morristown? Looks like it is about an hour by train to NYC just like Montclair and I read some nice things about it.
MoTown is very nice. I lived there for four years before moving to Jersey City. The train to NYC is not everything it is cracked-up to be. I commuted on that train for four years to Midtown East. 1 hour to NY Penn Station, then the 1,2, or 3 train to Times Square and finally the Shuttle to Grand Central. 1 hour 45 minutes one way seat-to-seat with walking and wait time. On the weekends the train is a local so it is over an hour to NY Penn. It also stops running to Motown just after midnight. If you plan to spend a lot of time in NYC forget Motown. However, if you will only go there occasionally then MoTown can work. It is a dog-friendly place, lots cyclists and runners. There are three colleges surrounding MoTown so it has a bit of a college vibe (St. Elizabeth, Drew University and Fairleigh Dickinson). Nice place, safe, trees and parks, good people, not convenient to NYC.
Thanks - is South Orange mostly a Seton Hall crowd or would non-SH people fit in?
It is a college town but it has alot of after college folks your age due to the downtown. Not quite as active nightlife as say montclair or morristown but still solid. South orange also has the quicker train to NYC.

Agree with pinky, the train is a much more viable option from South Orange and there are also some new apartments that have been built in downtown.
I'm really hesitant on South Orange due to the college. I'm worried the nice apartment complexes will be overrun with loud college kids.
South Orange is not a "college town" like you envision. It's primarily young families. You're not going to walk into a bar and be overrun with rowdy college kids.
If you're going to consider South Orange you may as well consider Maplewood too. They are practically the same town (they share a high school).
