Hi,

I'll be moving to a new job in Franklin Lakes but I'm struggling on where to find a one bedroom apartment. I'm 22, single female with a max rent of $1300. I don't mind commuting up to around 45 mins. I also will be bringing my small dog with me (20 lbs.) So its been a little hard to find a place that allows dogs within my budget. :P

I mainly need advice on commuting and don't mind going into a nearby town for night life or anything. Also, would commuting from upstate NY be a nightmare?

Thanks!

What specific type of 1 bedroom are you looking for? You renting out a portion of a house in a nearby suburb? Or, a garden apartment? Or taking the elevator up to your place in a highrise? You can live alone in that part of Jersey for $1,300. Maybe less.

45 minutes from Franklin Lakes is...a rather broad blanket of possibilities. What do you mean by "upstate" New York? Commuting from upstate New York would be horrific because upstate is 4 hours away. If you're talking about from Rockland, Orange, or Westchester then no it shouldn't be bad. Long as you are within the southern portions of the counties and not too far.

What do you look for in a town? Let us knkw

You can find what you are looking for locally. Look in Pompton lakes and Fair Lawn. Probably are complexes that fit what you are looking for. Possibly Mahwah too although the place I'm thinking of might not be in range anymore

If you are willing to rent directly from someone you should have more options. In addition to the towns previously mentioned, look at Hawthorne, Waldwick, Midland Park, Suffern NY, etc.

Everywhere mentioned should have like a 20 minute commute or less

Franklin Lakes and surrounding towns are pretty expensive.

Vernon has rentals in your price range and would be about 45 minutes. I used to drive back and forth between the two towns all the time and it wasn't a bad ride. You may be able to find something in the Butler area which would be a little closer.

By "upstate" I really just meant anything not NYC lol Like near Chester / Goshen area. I'd like a garden apartment preferably since that will be easier with my dog.

Westwood would be a half hour away and should have garden apts in your price range. I like that town for a young person because it has some fun bars, a trader joes, and good gym and yoga studios.

Parsippany might also have some places available. Commute to Franklin Lakes wouldn't be too bad if you take 287 since you would be going against most of the traffic.

I was definitely interested in westwood but didn't find any under $1400... unless they're not all online

As you probably already know, Franklin Lakes is a beautiful area. That said, go to a map and draw a circle around, X miles and you'll see a capture area. Heading directly east from FL along Rt. 208 will bring you heading in the direction of heading toward NYC. Looking at the surrounding towns immediate to FL -- Wycoff for example -- could be a very good option. Midland Park, Saddle Brook, and Fair Lawn as well. At that price level you are either looking at an apartment in a home or a garden apartment, and the latter will have to accept dogs. They do exist, you just have to look.

Commuting will be easy for you as you would be avoiding NYC/rush hour traffic.

I would look East from FL and perhaps slightly north and south, perhaps along Rt. 17. Nightlife, restaurants, shopping, etc., won't be a problem. I'm single and there is no shortage of things to do all around Bergen County.

Good luck.
