I am familiar with several types of "Russians" that live in the tri state area. Those are:

1) Ethnically Russian refugees from the Bolshevik revolution who kept up their language. Those would typically be Russian Orthodox or agnostic. There aren't that many of them around but I met a few.

2) Russian/Ukrainian/Moldovan/Bukharian etc. Jews who escaped/left the Soviet Union and Russia and whose native language is Russian.

3) Bright students from the former Republics of the Soviet Union who came to America on student visa, got a job and stayed. Professionals from the former Republics of the Soviet Union who cam to US on work visa and stayed.

4) Illegal or semi legal immigrants from other poor former Republics of the Soviet Union who work odd jobs in the service sector. They all speak Russian though for some of them it might not be a primary language.

There could be other categories I don't know about.

From what I know Fair Lawn has categories 2-4 above with the slight majority of Jewish immigrants (category 2). Which type of "Russian" is this thread about?

@ DefiantNJ

That's what posted in Russian on another page. OP really has to do a better job defining "Russians" he/she is looking for. here in North Jersey if you speak Russian in public, do not expect that no bystander will understand you.

Fairlawn is an distinctly interesting place, different from Brooklyns in that regard

You have Russian speaking families moving from Brooklyn to NJ looking for good schools. That has been always going on.

Does any-one know where i can get good Russian vodka in NJ ?

I ddin't mean Brooklyn as a hipster pit, I meant old Brooklyn where all the Russians lived. Lots of my friends live there, they moved from Coney Island area to Fairlawn to live in the "wilderness"

No, because it was in the early/mid 80s, before the Russians got there.

Didn't bother me that the Russians came. I worked at the World Trade Center. Was pretty much used to knowing people from all over the planet. I knew an Uzbek and a Sherpa from work!

During the summer they congregate to the beach at Avon By the Sea. Very rude people to say the least..
