I've been on the job market for just a few weeks and noticed that for my industry there are tons of jobs in northern NJ. Even though I really wanted to move my wife and 2 kids to Old Bridge or Matawan (better houses, lower taxes compared to Bergen county), I am seeing that jobs are closer to towns like Fair Lawn, Wayne, Paramus, etc.
Currently I reside in Brooklyn, NY and plan to get out to NJ in the next few months. Do not want to pay $35/day in tolls and gas plus over an hour commute.
Question is ... what towns can offer me good neighborhoods and be somewhat close to Paramus, Oradel, Wayne? I am ok with a 40min drive, but the less it is, the better.
Kids are about to start pre-k and daycare. I care about schools but we're not crazy about it. Budget around 400-500k. Rather get a cozy 3-4 bdr / 2,000sq/f new looking home than huge mess that needs renovation. Outside space / backyard is important.
I'd still need this house to be somewhat in a decent commute to NYC (under 1.5 hours), just in case
Thank you.

Off the "top of my head" without looking or thinking much, places like a good portion of Morris County such as Rockaway Township on Boonton Twsp, etc.
I think many places in the hillier parts to the NW near your target job towns also.

Clifton, Nutley, Montclair...you might be able to find a decent home that has been overhauled and kept up to date.
