I'm moving to the States from Ireland for 9 months and I'm going to be studying at Princeton. I'm looking at accommodation options and I'm uncertain as to where to even begin!
I don't mind a commute as long as it's cheap and has wifi. I'm looking for a studio (preferably) but my budget does not go over $1000 per month for rent. Would commuting from Philadelphia be an option, or even Hoboken on the other side? Rent around Princeton seems really high... Is my budget simply too low?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and please ask for more information!
Have you considered sharing an apartment with one or more other students? If you are studying, I think a long commute would take up too much of your time. I have never lived in Princeton, but have been there for conferences and always stayed in Princeton itself.
Possibly Princeton University might have a student housing office that could help you in finding more affordable housing, a roommate, and so on.

If you think that rents in the Princeton area are high, then you obviously haven't priced accommodations in Hoboken!
Yes, your budget is too low, unless you are willing to share an apartment with roommates.
Additionally, I think that a commute from Hoboken or Philly would become very tiresome, very quickly--not to mention...very expensive. You are probably used to the reasonable prices for mass transit in Europe. Unfortunately, mass transit in The US tends to be very pricey.
I would suggest looking for accommodations in New Brunswick, which isn't very far from Princeton, and because NB is a college town, there is a large supply of cheaper rental housing available.
Have you checked with the University to see if there's housing available or if they can help you at all? That would be my first step. Even if you're a grad student sometimes schools have graduate student housing options. There may be nearby apartments or houses that are frequently rented out to students that the school may be aware of. I would assume Princeton has a Res Ed office like most others schools. Look on their website for anything about housing or who to contact regarding housing. Living in Princeton itself is nice so if you could save a commute you wouldn't be losing out on anything else, really.
I think Hoboken is too far to commute to/from Princeton. You would probably spend another $500/$1000 on gas and tolls and take hours.
Start off by figuring size of towns you want to live in. NJ has many cooler places, Hoboken is next to NYC and congested itself. Also in Hoboken you are paying the price of being close to NYC making it expensive. Parking is very tight and so on.
Here's an apartment for $1275. It includes utilities except for electricity (oil heat). Says it's walking distance to the Princeton Junction train station, but probably a bike would be better. From the train station you can take the Dinky train into Princeton. I think it's a dollar each way.

The Dinky stops in Princeton right by the campus. Princeton U. runs free shuttle buses all over the campus & to some points beyond. Note that the summer bus schedule differs from the rest of the year.
