There are buses from Parsippany to Lower Manhattan during early morning hours. So if you're going early in the morning, maybe leaving Parsippany at 6 or 7AM, you could take one of those buses. Otherwise, you could take a Lakeland bus from Parsippany to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, and then take the E train subway to World Trade Center.
Lakeland Bus information: Lakeland Bus Lines - Commuter and Local Bus Schedules | Lakeland Bus Lines Inc.

If you want to take PATH, I would drive to Harrison instead of Newark.
PATH information: Maps & Schedule - PATH - The Port Authority of NY & NJ

What is the difference between Newark and Harrison? They look to be the same distance from our hotel?

Easier/cheaper parking, fewer panhandlers and junkies hanging around.

OK. Thank you. About 15 of us coming from out of state ifor a wedding and would like to figure this out. None of us have ever been to NJ or NY and we only have 1 free day. Do you think we could drive to lower Manhattan?

Do you think we would want to go into NYC? Is there anything else to do around the memorial?

Oh wow, 15? If you're traveling in a giant van, it might be cheaper to drive and park in Manhattan than buying 15 train tickets (maybe not). Parking in Manhattan is $30-40 per day, plus there's a $13 toll at the tunnels. So driving in can be very expensive, and traffic can be bad too. So if you can take transit, you're better off, IMO.

Lower Manhattan is a quieter area of town than Midtown. But there are things to do around there. The memorial is nice. The 9/11 museum is very well-done, but it can be a bit sad and change the mood of a fun day. You can go to the top of 1 WTC, 110 stories above the city and get some great views of the whole city. Or if you just want to walk around, Wall Street is nearby, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge, Skyscraper Museum, Battery Park for a view of the harbor and Statue of Liberty in the distance. If you want to get a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty you can ride the free ferry to Staten Island and snap pics while you pass the statue. If you're up for a really long walk, you can head north from WTC instead and hit Chinatown, Little Italy, SoHo shopping district, and/or the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side.

If you first-time visitors want to get some of the headlining attractions in NYC, you can head up to Midtown by taxi or subway. A couple of hours of walking around and you can see the Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, MoMa, High Line, etc. There are also tour buses that will zip you around and show you all of the sights. In fact, with such a large group, you might be able to get a group rate, or maybe even your own tour. You could catch a PATH train at 33rd Street and 6th Avenue that will take you back to NJ (you'll have to transfer trains at Journal Square to get to Harrison).
