I'm hoping someone has experience with what i'm about to ask...

My parents live in Bergen County. My father is 70 years old, receives SSA and SSI. My mother is 63 and she receives SSA and SNAP (Food stamps). They do not work. They receive combined $1000 from SSA and SSI. They currently live in my 2nd home (Rent Free). My mortgage is $1500 per month. I pay for their utilities. Occasionally i provide groceries, clothes and other things but NEVER give them money. Since 3 years ago, they've applied to 10+ senior housing under HABC (Housing Authority of Bergen County). Most of these affordable apartments only charge 30% of their income as rent. In their case, that's only $300 per month. Recently, they were accepted into an affordable housing but this particular building charges a fixed $900 per month (not 30% of income). I offered to help pay for $600 (directly to the property) of the $900 and they would take on the balance of $300.

My parents believe they will be disqualified from getting into the senior housing that only charges 30% because, my parents "heard" if someone helps them pay rent, it will show that they have other sources of income. Is this assumption true or false? I'm not giving my parents money. I'll be writing a check to the management office.

Does anyone have similar experience? My mortgage is a burden to me (recently became unemployed) and timing is perfect where they were accepted into this "flat rate affordable housing". But my parents don't want to take this opportunity.

they probably do not want to move, change is hard for older people.

another option is to have section 8 pay for the apartment you give them for free.

I would try jfs Bergen in Teaneck or senior services at the county in Hackensack to see if there is anyone who can answer your questions and provide additional resources. They are lucky they live in Bergen, it the best county for this kind of support.
If you call 211 there may be other appropriate resources.
Good luck
