can some one tell me what paramus is like, i orginally lived in suburban western mass, and moved to miami. now we are looking to move back north and there is a oppurtunity for me at bergen regional medical center.
any info housing traffic the hospital ect would be great
there's a lot of malls in paramus (one huge one being garden state plaza) and highways with stores on them (rt 17), so except for sunday when there's a blue law, i'd say traffic is pretty bad.
I've lived in Paramus for 54 years. It was a town of truck farms back then. It is now one of the area's biggest mall towns.
Albeit, traffic is a problem, we benefit from very low taxes. The school system is excellent. Our two kids went through it K-12.
We live near Bergen Pines Hospital (Bergen Regional). Valley Hospital in neighboring Ridgewood is the hospital preferred by local residents.
Another area hospital, Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood , recently closed because of financial trouble. Pascack served many low income patients, which is sad testimony to the direction medical care is going.
Two of my neighbors have sold their houses. They had a very diffficult time selling. The housing market here is bad, as it is just about everywhere. My next-door neighbor has had his house for sale for about a year, and has not yet received an acceptable offer.
I moved here as a teeenager, and I am now retired here in the same house I raised my family in. I am happy and have learned how to deal with the hussle and bustle.
Hope this helps. best of luck to you in your relocation.
Bill
Paramus is suburban sprawl at it's worst. No charm, no downtown, no mass transit. Nice stores, all on a highway. Good luck getting in and out of the parking lots without getting killed by the traffic on Route 17 wizzing by.
But just because you work in Paramus does not mean you have to live there. If you want charm, restaurants, boutiques, trains to NY, then try Westwood, Ridgewood or Ramsey. All have downtowns, all are walkable and have movie theaters downtown. A breath of fresh air in suburbia.
How low are Paramus taxes? What I noticed about Paramus (when we were looking this past summer) is no houses under 400k or even 450k. Just wondering if they are so low to justify increased housing costs or just no houses in this range available for other reasons?
I think Paramus is fine. You can complain about traffic and parking lots but if you live in Northern Bergen county you are likely in Paramus a few times a week. I know we are. My wife works there, we go to Trader Joe's, CampMor, Barnes and Noble, Paramus Park, etc. Definitely agree though that there is no "downtown" of Paramus.
Taxes for a Cape Cod appraised at $335,000 (market value about $500,000) in 2007 were around $5,000. Reappraisal was done for 2008. I don't expect a tremendous increase. I'm not in the real estate business, but I believe our tax rate is better than that of the surrounding towns like, Ridgewood,Washington Township(Begen County), Saddle River, Hohokus, Etc.
Paramus does have traffic but it also has lower, taxes, great schools, and tons of programs for kids. It is a great community and while it does not have a "downtown" it has tons of stores and tons of restaurants.

Tons of fast-food restaurants. And Hooters.
If Bergen County has a restaurant row, it's in Ridgewood, not Paramus.
Chakra, Biagios, El Cid, Kiku and the ones in the Malls, Napa Valley Grill, Pacific Grill, Bensi.
It is soo close to Ridgewood and you will get 2x as much of a house for the money and the taxes are lower and you can drive 2 minutes to the restaurants in Ridgewood if need be. Actually part of paramus boarders Ridgewood and you could easily walk to the shopping dist. there.
