My commute from Glen Ridge. I take the 7:25am jitney on my corner, to a 40 min train, then hop on the 1 train. I arrive at work at 8:35. Alternatively, I could walk 5 minutes to a DeCamp bus, which is 35-55 min, as long as you leave before 7:30am. Then walk 10 minutes from Port Authority. No transfers. Neither commute requires hoping in a car.
At night, the bus is quicker, and if you leave after rush hour traffic (after 7pm), its literally a 25-30 min bus. Which is on par with my old commute to the Upper East Side.
You could get a 4 bedroom home within your budget in GR (3 upstairs / 1 in the attic), but it require a bit of TLC for your budget, since things trade over the asking price.
Taxes in GR are something they should be aware of though, 700K ends up being what, about 20K a year? We love Glen Ridge but just couldn't make the taxes work for us.
Thanks, but Glen Ridge seems pretty far north for me to get to NB. And yeah, $20k in taxes is more than I'd be willing to pay. (Trying to wrap my head around NJ taxes in general has been a challenge enough!)
Without opining on the towns themselves, I'd strongly argue that Metuchen offers a better and shorter commute to Midtown than Scotch Plains because it's on the Northeast Corridor line and therefore trains go directly to New York Penn.
Without question, it's the best commute to New Brunswick of the towns listed. If the New Brunswick office is anywhere near the train station could even take the train to work - it's less than a 10 minute train ride.
Agree with this. New brunswick traffic can be quite bad, esp on Easton ave and near the train station. If you can take the train, you will save time.
Short Hills and New Brunswick is a bad pairing, because as you've probably noticed the roads don't run that way. For New Brunswick/NYC Metuchen is probably ideal; train to Manhattan, train or drive to NB depending on schedule and destination.
Metuchen is a short train ride to NYC and a fast drive, about 15 minutes to New Brunswick at rush hour. I like it's main street. Westfield is also nice and close to Short Hills and a train to NYC, about 35-40 min. drive to NB though. Maybe nicer houses further out but trust me, the shorter the commute the happier life you will have.
another recommendation for Scotch Plains. Very family friendly and an active newcomers association as well. Commute to the city may be slightly above your limit, though. I commute to downtown. Yes, its 1 hour exactly (when the stars align) from Fanwood to WTC, but you have to add on time for getting to the train then getting from your destination to wherever work would be

I moved to NJ from MD (Silver Spring) and experienced the same property tax shock. However, my income taxes are quite a bit lower in NJ. Not enough to offset the property taxes, but at least it's something.
