i am new in City-Data as well to this metropolitan area.My daily commute is from home in Verona Nj all the way to work in Yonkers NY. Since i am paying everyday for the privilege to be in NYC ( $ 12 toll everytime i cross George Washington Bridge). i think i should take more advantage to the city by taking a class, go to a coffee shop, a meet up, museums , seminars, lectures , grab a beer etc. The issue is that i have to drive to work, therefore i have to take the car with me.
Is there any easy way to get to the city figuring out the car situation ? probably leaving the car in Secaucus NJ? and from there taking either the bus or a train. . OR i better drive all the way down to the city, to a not very busy street ( or area that you could recommend) where i can street park and avoiding super expensive parking garages?
What would be the faster , cheaper or efficient way to do this ?
Be careful with street parking. I can't speak for the parking rules of suburban towns near transit, but in Hudson County most (if not all) towns require you to have a residential parking permit to park on the street. This includes Secaucus. It's basically meant to keep people like you from taking all our parking spots.
So you'd be coming from work in Yonkers to do something in the city, then going home to Verona? Best bet would be to find parking in Upper Manhattan near an A subway stop. I don't know if there's street parking available in that area.
Parking on the street in Washington heights is tough, also tough around 125th. I would go down to 96 th and Broadway and try to find something on the street there. I think many meters are free after 7 pm. It's not so hard to hop on to the west side highway from 96th St and go home across the Gwb.
thanks so much for your advise guys, i agree that is better to drive down to Upper West Side to leave the car there. other options would be time consuming and more money . i dont want to get back home at midnight!.
Actually none of the options leaving the car and taking bus/train are Cost and TIME effective. leaving the car in point A , waiting / taking transportation to go to the city at point B then again comeback to A, and once in A driving 45 minutes to point C where my house is .....???. It is possible, but the idea is to get back home on a decent time, at least not your best bet on weekdays.
I drove down to NYC early this week and I left my car close to 95 street and West end ave. close to Emily Dickinson school, easy street parking after hours , close to Broadway ave.,nearby a train station and many stores . I think that's good for now, if I need to head further south from there, it would probably gets tricky but I could get a parking garage at last instance.
thanks you all.

And this is why tons with a train or nyc bus are so much more expensive!
As an aside, when i lived in west orange, it wasnt too bad driving to harrison and taking the path. can take an 1:15 to 2hrs though depending on where you are going. But my commute is only 40 minutes now with a bus on the corner. We moved specifically because of the commute.
Hopefully you find a better option!
