I'd return to NJ if property taxes were reasonable. At least I'm only 3-4 hours away in MD, which I now call my home. It took me about 10 years to call MD home. I always thought living in MD was only temporary and that the end goal was returning to NJ. My cousins and friends stopped asking me years ago when I would be returning home. Hell, all of my neighborhood friends have left NJ for the South. No more stickball or wiffleball games for me.

I left North NJ for Northern CA when because of work. Was excited to leave NJ at first, then missed bagels, pizza, and just the characteristic way people interact with each other here. Missed a few other things as well.

I ended up returning to NJ a few years later. I don't regret moving back, but I do find myself missing Northern CA. I do want to move out for good eventually, but haven't figured out where yet (narrowed it down to a short list of 3 places). The living expenses (restaurants have a health tax too) and real estate were even higher in the SF Bay Area so taxes are not something I regret in my return to NJ - if anything, NJ is more affordable overall.
