Not going to put hard rankings as I believe it all amounts to personal taste. Travel through all the towns, drive some of the sidestreets to see what kind of houses there are and what kind of neighborhoods there are. A few things.

Maywood - I would eliminate this one due to nearby superfund site.

River Edge and Fair Lawn - Expensive

Bergenfield, Dumont, New Milford - All nice towns where you will usually get a 50ft x 100ft lot, some larger, a few smaller. Bergenfield is a nice racially and ethnically diverse town with some interesting eateries. Part of New Milford is very close to Hackensack River which may require flood insurance.

Bogota and Ridgefield Park - More urban (especially Ridgefield Park) than Bergenfield, Dumont and New Milford. Houses are much closer together and less property. These two towns also abut the Hackensack River, so here again, parts of these towns may require flood insurance. PSE&G generating station is just south of Ridgefield Park, so that is something to consider.

Saddlebroook and Elmwood Park - Sorry, I don't know a lot about these two.

Toward the bottom. Little Ferry has flood issues and absurdly high taxes for a town with mediocre schools, no high school or train station.

Rochelle Park is a little nicer than Little Ferry but uses Hackensack for high school, which isn't very good.

The schools in Elmwood Park aren't really that great. If I had kids, I wouldn't be considering it.
The majority of the town seems to be pretty decent. Also, if you want peace and quiet, it might not be the best area for you. LOTS of road noise from rt 80 and Parkway and from the trains at night.

On the flip side, it's well connected and it's easy to get to the city via train or bus. There's also a lot of highways close by, so getting anywhere tends to be relatively quick/easy.
