If you're looking to spend a little more, you can check out condos in Jersey City. The Sutton building at Liberty Harbor North is all rentals and are extremely close to the city without the city price and craziness.

The price is worth it if you are going to spend a lot of money driving (gas prices) or taking public transit (the further away you get, the more money train tickets and bus passes are).

You might get a studio in Bloomfield near the center of town. Try Forest Hill Properties on Davey St. They own other buildings also and one may suit your needs. Good luck!
