You are going to have to consider renting a room or getting some roomates at that price, if you want to live in a safe area. I'm sorry

$750 - $800 won't get you far in NJ. I'm guessing you're talking about a studio or a 1-bedroom apartment?

Don't knock Newark completely off your list. There are some relatively safe areas near Penn Station (yes, the train station in Newark is also called Penn Station) in the Ironbound neighborhood.

There is a nice old office building on the other side of the train station that was recently gutted and turned into rental apartments. I have never been there and I don't know the prices, but they have studios that might fit your budget. They have a website:

Eleven80 Sensational Rental Residences | Newark, New Jersey

You'd be about a 5 minute walk to the Newark train station, and then about 30 minutes from NYC by PATH (to World Trade Center) or maybe 20 minutes with NJ Transit (to New York Penn Station).

The further you go out the cheaper the rents BUT your commute becomes longer and the train or bus ticket becomes more expansive(They get you one way or the other)

At that price you are going to be getting an apartment in a home and it wont be very close to NYC. You are looking at a 45 minute drive mininum. Towns that have house apartments that might work for you are South River, East Brunswick (Rare), Edison, New Brunswick, and a few others. If you go out further, you might be able to get a studio in a building.

Check out Madison, Chatham, and New Providence. This was awhile ago; but I had friends that lived there for that price.

$750-800 will not get you very far in NJ, other than some of the cities like Linden, elizabeth, newark, etc.
