I'll be moving from Texas to Bedminster in a month, and I'd like to visit NYC occasionally. What would you suggest would be the best (cheapest, least stressful) way to get there? Driving is undoubtedly the fastest, but the $13 one-way toll + rumors of NYC traffic + (I assume) impossible parking doesn't seem worth it to drive. If by train or bus, which routes should I take?
If it's on weekend, I would drive to downtown Jersey City, find a spot to park on the street, take PATH.
If it's during week, I would just drive to the nearest NJ Transit station and take a train (you need to transfer at Newark Penn station). I can't speak for other lines, but there are a few direct train to NYC off peak hours on Raritan valley line.
Thanks! Does the Newark station operate on the weekends?
The reason why I made a distinction between weekdays and weekends is not because NJ Transit isn't running on weekends (It is running 365 days). It's because it's cheaper to go to Jersey City and take PATH than taking NJ Transit all the way. On weekends, you can park on the street in Downtown Jersey City for free. You can take PATH either from Grove St station or Exchange Place station.

Driving via 78 to one of the ferry's or into the city and park at the port authority bldg. Least stressful.
Early am on weekends, esp Sundays, is almost a lonely drive.
Public trans to NYC is foreign to more NJ residents that anyone might believe.
