I bought a home and I want to find out when the unit was installed can that be done without contacting the previous owners? I do not have have a way of getting in touch with them. Is there a record of this somewhere? Thanks

If you can find the serial number on the unit, it is
possible that the manufacturer might be able to tell you when the unit was made. That--of course--wouldn't tell you when it was installed, but it would probably be a fairly good indication as to the age of the unit

There's usually a date code on the compressor (outside unit), but they can sit around for a year or more before being installed. Also, the installer typically sticks their company name and number somewhere on the inside unit; you can call them up and they may know.

You can also call the town and see if there was a permit pulled when it was last installed. You might have to do an OPRA request if it was a long time ago.

Assuming permit was requested which is not always the case
The other two methods have already been mentioned:
1) You might be able to find a sticker with the installer's information and then you can call them.
2) Sometimes individual compressor units even have the date when they are manufactured. Assume that they have been installed the same year or next year the latest...
But why do you need to know, are there issues with this AC?

Our inspector was able to guess about 20 years by the serial and other parts associated with the install. Best of luck!

Was that info not noted in the inspection report that you would have had done prior to buying the house?
A friend recently bought a house in NJ and their inspection included the dates for the water heater, heat & air con systems.
If the township did an inspection when the system was installed than there should be a township certificate glued on to the mechanism.
Also, if all else fails than the former home owner's attorney from the closing should know how to contact them.
