I just heard that today at work - someone was wondering how far I lived away from work, and when I said Carteret, they said its known as Carter-Rico. I lived here all my life and never heard of that name once. Is that really what it called? If it is, where the heck have I been? LOL

I never heard that nickname either, and I lived in Rahway for several years, plus I worked in Woodbridge Township for 40 years. I can tell you, however, that there are folks in that area who pronounce the town's name as CAT-a-ret.

It seems pretty offensive and inaccurate. Carteret is so diverse, I don't think there are too enough Puerto Ricans to really call it Carter-Rico.

The Puerto Ricans have been here since 1943, long enough to have moved up the ladder, and Carteret will not be it......Once they used to control Perth Amboy, now the Dominicans from Santo Domingo have taken over.....

Puerto Ricans still have a lot of political power in Perth Amboy even if they are no longer the largest ethnic group. The mayor is Puerto Rican, I believe many of the council members are Puerto Rican, even the CEO of a Jewish nonprofit here is Puerto Rican. And it isn't Dominicans from Santo Domingo taking over, it is Dominicans from La Vega.
