Hello everyone! I'm going on a family trip to Asbury Park for Labor Day weekend from D.C. Never been to that beach. Can we have a thread about all the advice you can give to someone going for the first time? For reference, the family ages range from elementary school age to senior citizens.

Thanks so much Jerseyans!

Don't know what you expect, the beach is nice and clean but if you are expecting like the old days with rides or amusements like in the 60's or 70's you will be disappointed.

Yes, the beach in A.P. is a good one, but that town's only other attraction is its very good restaurants.
If you and your family are "foodies" you will have several really good possibilities for dining each night.
If you're not "foodies", then the beach is just about the only thing that might attract you to A.P.

OK, what about the nearby towns like Orange Grove? We don't want the kids to get bored. That's why we chose a beach with a boardwalk.

We love great food. If you have any specific restaurant recommendations, shoot.

I hear what you're saying about the amusement rides. Seriously, what do kids do now anymore? Besides making sand castles and eating popsicles.

Ocean Grove is charming, but don't look for much excitement there. If you want to take the kids on rides, then you can drive south to Seaside Heights.

As to food in A.P., Bonney Read is excellent for seafood, and Pascal & Sabine is a very nice French resto.

Asbury Park has a bit of a club scene and is also gay friendly. Be mindful of this when booking a hotel as some cater to a nonfamily clientele. There is a gallery show of rock and roll photographs at the Asbury hotel that looks good!

I would recommend Point Pleasant Beach before Seaside Heights if you want rides for kids.

There is a beach playground and splash pad (which is for very little kids) in Asbury, and plenty of ice cream and food places, and shops to entertain kids right on the boardwalk. I don't think kids will be bored.

I was there yesterday for the first time. I had a really good time. Parking wasn't bad. I arrived at around 11 am and there were a few spots still. I wouldn't imagine it's much more crowded on the weekends. Beach was nice and clean, live music playing in the background. Overall just a really nice time. People on this forum kept saying the area outside the beach is ghetto so I was bracing myself for an Atlantic City type environment but from what I saw it didn't seem that bad at all. The area near the beach was really nice with a bunch of restaurants and shops. Ate at Bonney Read. Area a bit further from the beach wasn't as nice but not a complete dump either. I would go again.
