Was driving through North Bergen the other day and saw this sign that looked like a white iron cross on a red background out of the corner of my eye. But on closer inspection I think it's supposed to be a flower but someone wasn't thinking about the negative space in their design.

In Google Street View for more context: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8041...7i13312!8i6656

Cheers,
Ben

Never saw that before myself BUT when I went to the Goo Map page and saw the picture,,, FIRE HYDRANT.

To double check I went up that street to another fire hydrant and saw an exactly similar sign.
Helps FD find hydrants when flames are popping.

See this one up the street:

Heres another one a block or 2 away,,, when you look at it further away it starts to look like a Maltese cross:

Interesting. In Texas they use little blue reflectors on the road itself.

It is a white Maltese cross on a red background; the Maltese cross is associated with fire departments for some reason. In Pennsylvania they just have red and white striped poles sticking up from the hydrant (to alert snowplow operators, mostly)

The Maltese cross is a typical symbol for firefighters, this version just seems a bit too simplified.

Exactly!
Those signs are posted in order to enable firefighters to locate hydrants. Especially when there are snow drifts that can obscure fire hydrants, but also at other times, it is important for firefighters to be able to find the closest hydrant without delay.
For everyone other than an on-duty fire fighter... those signs are not meant to communicate anything to you!
