what is your landscaper charging you and what size is your lot?

my lot is 1 acre and i was just quoted 850+ tax.

i am thinking about getting some kind of leaf vacuum thingie. this seems like a very expensive proposition. i just moved from a community where it is taken care of by the HOA not me.

That's a lot of money. If you are willing to take the trouble then doing yourself is not that hard as long as you have the correct equipment and follow some easy guidelines. I have been doing it myself for number of years although my property is much small.

My suggestion is to buy a backpack blower instead of handheld. You also need soundproof headphone and mask. The key is to do it multiple times rather than pile the leaf for one big cleanout. You also need leaf racker, gloves etc. You can also hire someone for a day and then let do the work with your equipment. All in all costs will be much lower than what is being quoted even for a year. Good luck.

Seconding the backpack blower. My husband seems to love it, he's been walking around with it casually blowing leaves off the lawn, dirt off the sidewalk, etc.

A rake and a tarp or if that's to much to handle mow the leaves and let them blow away. Wow.

That's the price you pay for sloth.

When I was a kid, we'd have a Saturday when the whole family was outside with rakes. First we raked the leaves into "roads" and "houses" and then we raked them into one big pile, buried potatoes in them, and burned the leaves. When the fire was done, we found the potatoes and ate them with butter and salt. Best potatoes EVER.

I agree with this too. What happened to families going outside with their kids to do yard work? We cleaned and did yard work every weekend as kids. My mom left us a note with cleaning assignments, and we'd go outside with both parents to clean up the yard. Not ALL weekend, but usually Saturday or Sunday morning til noon.

My daughter and family still do this, although they live in Vermont. Kids have chores every day and responsible for their own laundry too.

One of the worst things ever invented are those stupid backpack leaf blowers. They stink up the air and the noise is horrible.

Yes, my mother would post it on the side of the refrigerator. Our names with our assigned chores underneath. We would all complain that we got the hardest jobs, lol, but we knew we had to do them before we were free to just go play.

im just going to have to have more kids to do this yard.

im thinking about getting some more substantial equipment to handle this job. i already purchased a backpack blower but i may go further. it seems like the financials of spending on equipment work when it comes to paying a service for the job.

i have heard of controversy regarding the noise of blowers. my neighbor right across the street from me was blowing his whole front yard in the morning and i couldnt hear a thing from my house. either people with problems have much closer houses or very sensitive ears.
