For now, I am here. My mother is 89 years old. I am one of six living siblings (lost my older brother in 2006), but because of the various circumstances of the others, I am Most Likely To Have To Help Mom should she become incapacitated, so I have to maintain a nearby presence. Right now she is living in the house she and my father built in 1957. My two brothers live with her. One is currently recovering from a blood clot on his lung, the other has a deteriorating spine and is in constant pain. The one with the blood clot was working up until now and also maintains the house and yard for her.

In other words, my mother, who drives herself to dialysis three times a week and had a quad bypass two years ago, is the one in the best shape in that house. She still occasionally beats me at Scrabble. But she is aging and getting a little wobbly on her legs sometimes, and I want to be able to get to her quickly if need be. I do have two sisters in New Jersey and one in Pennsylvania, so there is backup.

I just visited Great Barrington in the Berkshires last month. Beautiful place.

I learned to love Vermont after going up several times to a writers retreat I found up there. It's about a six-hour drive from here.

You're that kid. I was that kid. My eldest brother died years ago, sister lives on the left coast, and the other person I happen to be related to is...

When I lived in Fayetteville, NC, I sometimes needed to drive to NEPA to take care of them. Dad would be released from the hospital and mom would get sick, or something. The person (yeah, my other brother) who lived eight miles away couldn't take care of this. He was too busy.

Wow, sorry about your siblings. My sister narrowly escaped death last year. She got a really bad headache, passed out, and hit the floor. Thankfully, it was the weekend and her husband was home. He drove her to the ER. Her blood pressure was outrageously high. The ER doc said that he was surprised that she was alive.

When she goes, I'll be the only person who remembers the penny candy store, the old street lights.

I know. My brother was kid No. 3, I am No. 4. There are things from our childhood that only he and I would remember, and now it is only me who remembers those things.

I try not to label NY because it is primarily the people from Long Island and Staten Island that bring the attitude and fences. The New Jersey I grew up in is gone. I always keep in mind when I see NY plates parked in the middle of the road blocking traffic, it's not the whole state it is just that person.

I want to go to a place less populated. I moved to Maine and was an outsider no matter what. I found they can give out sarcasm but can't take it. Was in shock how everyone I knew smoked pot! Living next to NYC I wanted nothing to do with drugs or the people that do them. Infidelity is abound, I was told when I moved there to expect it what else is there to do in the winter.

There are the nice population too you just have to find them and trust your gut if something seems suspicious. It is not all the Hallmark scene you would expect.

I am still blown away by how rural America still supports Trump after his continuous self sabotage which brings this country with him.
