Seems there's lots of money in some of these parts and, yet, outside of commuting to Midtown or lower Manhattan it seems that jobs are scarce.

Am I missing something??

No, you already said it. People commute to Manhattan from those places.

I moved down here from Bergen County. I took on the longer commute because I knew retirement was in sight and figured I could deal with it for a few years. I expected there to be fewer commuters, but there weren't. The trains were full. Not only was I surprised to see how many people were commuting on my train from points even further south than me, I was surprised at how many of them worked where I did. Then I started running into coworkers at Lowe's, at the diner, at the pet store, at the supermarket...

BTW, I did retire, and now I work part-time--in the city. I looked for jobs in Monmouth County, but there isn't much there.

Otherwise some of it depends on your particular field or profession or skill set.

Some fields pay well or almost as well in the suburbs as in the city.

Of the people that I know that live in those areas (and own their own homes), most commute into the city, a few have very high paying jobs in middlesex county (pharma, accounting), one or two have their own businesses and a couple are in high paying work from home positions (sales/IT/marketing).
