Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the eviction process in NJ is? I lost my job 2 months ago and landlord had a family member send me a letter telling me that I owe 7,000+ dollars by February 1st. I was paying partial payments from my child support because I am now unemployed and landlord is aware of this and was accepting partial payments. Now landlords family member is threatening eviction in the letter saying that she is a consultant for the landlord and that not only is the rent past due but it's also going up by 100.00. The condition of this apartment is truly uninhabitable there are mice galore and landlord has been told many times and sends unlisenced crackheads to exterminate but mice chew the walls daily and have chewed multiple holes in the closets pantry and living room and the exterminations are never done properly. There are mice running across the floors all day there is also black mold on the walls in the bathroom. I am not trying to justify my partial rent payments I wanted to move anyway but is this legal that she is sending me this letter with an amount that is not correct because the partial payments were not deducted and can I sue her for this mice infestation and mold? She lives in the building and when she was told and shown the holes they chewed to get in she told me the mice are in her apartment too like it's normal and OK and she suggested I buy steel wool to plug the holes.

If you only lost your job 2 months ago, how can you be in arrears $7000? I'm pretty sure you weren't paying $3500/month to live in an apartment with mice and mold issues.

Exactly my point. Landlord is adding late fees the amount of the rent and added February rent on there as well its in the letter. Do you have any real advice BTW or you just wanted to type something out of boredom?

At this point, the mouse issue is irrelevant. It does not justify you being $7,000.00 in arrears.

You declaring tha the unit “uninhabitable” is also irrelevant and simply an opinion. You would need to call the local housing authority and have the place inspected. Only the inspector can address a habitability issue. Understand, if it’s found to be truly uninhabitable, the inspector will condem the place and you will only be give a few days to vacate.

The time line for evictions is about 3-6 weeks in NJ....depending on how busy the courts are.

Having an eviction and a judgment on your record/credit report for back rent will make it nearly impossible to rent elsewhere for many many years.

It is not 7,000 landlord has accepted many partial payments and has not included that in the balance so maybe read next time and stop seeing what you want to see. This is useless to even ask a bunch of disgruntled judgemental bitter people with skeletons in their closets whos highlight of the day is commenting on city data... I bet you're on facebook doing the exact same thing... I don't need to associate with your types. Now report that.

You didn't make that clear, and your responses are rude.

Insulting people who volunteer their time to help you is unbelievably rude. If you don’t like the answers and the truth, get a lawyer and stop wasting out time. Truth is that your a deadbeat tenant and a landlords worse nightmare. There...I said it. Feel better now?

So... you would prefer that the landlord sent licensed crackheads?

Funny how the rents not paid but you still have internet access. I bet you have all the cable channels as well.
