Hi,
We're moving to New Jersey as soon as we can sell our place here in MA. My husband already spends Mon - Fri in Jersey City and I stay here in MA readying our house for sale hopefully by May. We hope to rent a small place in a beach town for the summer months and if our house in MA doesnt sell by the end of that time - we'll rent a regular home some place close to jersey city until we do and can then buy in NJ.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a family friendly safe beach town that is as close as possible to jersey city? Also is anyone familiar with a good source for longish rentals on the jersey shore?
Thanks very much for any help!

no beach town is close to jersey city, that said you'd need to travel to monmouth county to be about an hour away

There are no beach towns anywhere near JC. That said, if you're just looking for a beach town to live in for the summer, consider Point Pleasant or Ocean Grove. Both are very family friendly.

I would imagine it might be difficult to find a house at the shore open for the whole season at this point. Lots of seasonal rentals are repeat bookings, and most other homes have large numbers of weeks booked already. You might do better looking for something "close" to the beach, but inland a bit.

I think for summer-long rentals at the shore, you should've acted last October. I'd say check out the Atlantic Highlands area. It's at the very northern end of the Shore region, on Raritan Bay. It's close to Sea Bright, Long Branch, and Sandy Hook National Park beaches. There are ferries from Atlantic Highlands to Lower Manhattan, where you can catch a PATH train over to Jersey City. The North Jersey Coast Line commuter rail also stops in Middletown, and would take hubby to Newark, where he could switch to PATH to get to Jersey City. It would be a long commute.

Perhaps some of the lake towns in Morris County might be an option?

AH is a residential community, and not really a touristy beach area a summer rental here would be a rare animal, there are places for rent but they usually aren't of the tourist, summer crowd type. The commute to NYC from AH is best via ferry but it is expensive, and using it to get to JC is not really feasable, it lands in NYC on the east side and the WTC path station is a 15 minute walk.A commute to JC would be easiest via driving. there is a bus on rt 36 to both the PA bus terminal and Wall St in NYC and lastly the train is a 15 minute ride away. .
As for rentals in other towns, the october comment is misleading as there are plenty of places available now, the best route to finding a place is to visit the area and find a local real estate agent

Like others have said, no close beach towns but if you are just looking for something near the water then you have options that are somewhat close (South Amboy, Perth Amboy, Red Bank) but not sure if you will find a month to month rental.

If you are looking for a rental with a complete beach feel, then you are going to have to travel at least an hour. I would say try Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights or Seaside Park if that is of interest.
