i was talking to a guy at work about my future water usage now that I am installing sprinklers and he mentioned having a well drilled. i believe he said he did it for a business of his but his business used a lot of water (carwash). i am not aware of anyone i know having a well drilled for irrigation which makes me think it must not make sense to do. but i am curious what the cost is and any experiences or thoughts from people who know something about it.

If you have sewer that you pay based on your water bill usages, It can make sense ,

You can go with a extra meter but the overhead changes for the meter 12 month of the year, and progressive charges on some water companies can make it pay.

Ie: the 1st 10,000 Gallons Pay 1x The next 10K gallons pay 2x .. next 10K pay 3x....

Some Homeowner "groups" have drilled a well between a few home and share the cost and the infrastructural of the well to service a few lawn.

Do you live in Holmdel Township and is American Water Works your water utility? The township provides sewer services at a fixed rate depending on water usage, which includes lawn watering.

If you drill a well, you may as well use the same well water for domestic use and avoid the chlorine and fluorine that your water utility adds. You can still use the municipal sewers or put in a private septic system. A complete system will cost $20 to $35 thousand dollars depending on the types of soil on your property.
