First, thanks to all for inputs.
To qualify further, right now they appear having physics-tech-engg inclination and I "hopefully expect"(operating word) them to stay on-course but time will tell.
If that's the case then look more closely towards Union or Morris Counties where there are magnet schools tailored to physics-tech-engineering:
Incredibly difficult to get into but basically some of the top schools in the nation, free to county residents.
I considered that option long and hard- then someone drilled an idea into me that these are competitive and hence 1/10 chance high schools themselves. So I shdn't be banking on them, in all reasonableness I carry. I gotta choose a town where its own high school is pretty good. Of course if they show the caliber to get into a magnet- all the power to them!
As for the county magnet schools, they are fantastic for students in towns where the schools are bad, but are not that great for the better towns. I really do not think Middlesex schools are better than WWP (sure, I can make a school with high SAT scores if I only admit students that will get good scores no matter what) but fabulous for South Amboy or the Union county one better than Summit or Westfield but fabulous compared to Elizabeth. Sure your kid can do to a "performing arts" school instead of a traditional one if that is what they are into, but it doesnt make it a "better" school
I leave midtown work at 4:50 and I am at the table eating at 6:08 (and I have a 17 minute walk from the train station)
16 minutes to catch the 5:08 out of Penn, catch the 5:35 out of newark. Pull into westfield 5:51
Provided you catch the express trains, absolutely. Otherwise you add ten minutes to that and it's a 55 minute ride at best. Not everyone can leave at 4:50.

There are other express trains. Sure your commute can suck if you have to travel at bad times, I was just responding to the "train ride is closer to an hour"
does that time hold for morns as well? do u have kids in HS?
Like most that work in midtown (or at least the ones I know), I take the bus in the morning and the train home. If you go in early, the bus is 50 minutes from the train station to port authority. If you go in late, it can take 2-3 weeks :>
Kid snot in HS yet. But it can be a pain if you live far from it. No buses in town.

After the 5:35 the next one is at 6:25. Except for those two trains in the evening, the ride is going to be much closer to an hour if not over it. Because you must have missed the 5:35 more than once, that's just how Newark Penn works.
