Hi all,

My husband and I are looking to buy in Westfield and have seen a few houses we like. In particular we liked a house on Cumberland which is quaint and has room for renovations. Is this considered a good area (particularly for kids and families)? I've read everywhere that schools in general are great so that doesn't seem to be a concern for us but we just wanted to be sure we were in a good neighborhood.

Thank you for the help

It's Westfield, it'll be fine. Scotch Plains isn't a scary border town by a very long shot.

Compared to the rest of Westfield, it is looked down on, but that is like saying "I am dating the ugliest supermodel"

All areas of Westfield are wonderful for kids and families. I agree with sonofagunk.

Drive by yourself, not this holiday weekend when it is dead, but check it out one weekday after school and then again on a Saturday. Park your car and walk around and see for yourself.

One day there will be direct NYC train service during peak hours and that area is close enough to the train station to benefit. If you have a 10 year time horizon (because it will be years before a new tunnel is built) that area might see more price appreciation than others.

Also, I think that area is all McKinley zoned and when i had kids in middle school, the parents whose kids went to mckinley for elementary would go on and on about how much they loved it. They must have some kind of loyalty cult.
