My new bike lasted 2-3/4 days before it got stolen. I had 2 nice lights on it and used a 1/4 cable with combo lock for security. I locked it onto one of the designated bike receptacle.
I parked it at the Grove St. PATH (Jersey City) in plain sight on the main street. Between 9PM and midnight it got stolen.
And recommendations on how to Jersey proof my bike for PATH parking? I can't afford to keep buying bikes every week.
Back in my bike-riding days, I used a Kryptonite bike lock, and I never had any theft problems, even when leaving the bike in dicey areas. And, Kryptonite has greatly improved the technology of their products since I bought my old lock, so I would have to assume that their newer products are even more secure than their older ones were.
According to this article, there is a brand of bike lock--Abus-- that is somewhat better than Kryptonite's products, but of course that superiority also comes with a higher price. Take a look at this article for some good information on the topic:

But would it help in anyway? My neighbor saw his stolen bike (from NJ transit station) up for sale in craigslist in nearby town of Paterson. He informed our town police but they were not interested in following up.
1/4" cable locks are literally no better than using string. You're basically just trying to make your bike less attractive than the ones around it, so get a real lock, like the Kryptonite NYC or something similar.
Alternatively, get a folding bike and take it with you.

That's a good idea. I remember a guy somewhere on City-Data saying he saw his stolen bike for sale on a website and contacted the seller and said he was interested in buying it. When they met, he told the seller he wanted to take it for a test-ride first, and the seller said OK. And then he just rode home. Hehehe.
The seller had the nerve to text him all p.o.'d and he said, "Look dude, it was my bike and you stole it from where I parked it. You're lucky I didn't bring the cops with me."

This is my shocked face that the police were uninterested in bike thefts. Nothing makes them less concerned than bike thefts, it's infuriating.
