Really. My mother has lived in Bergen County, 30 miles from NYC, for 90 years, and has been to the city maybe 10 times. I don't think her mother and father were ever once in NYC.
People from NJ are not New Yorkers.
+1
When my family moved from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn--to Bayonne--in 1956, I was truly amazed that most of my elementary school classmates had never visited Manhattan, even though it lay just across the bay from Bayonne.

so i forget, as a holmdel resident do i live in northern or souther jersey?
i grew up in this area in monmouth county (manalapan & marlboro) and we always referred to is as central jersey. it wasnt until recently that i found out that there was a controversy about this.
I used to live in the area between Bordentown and the McGuire/Dix bases (moved to a better tax state). We always considered ourselves to be central Jersey.

There isn't . I too grew up in the area of Monmouth county and the only time there was a question(never a problem) is saying you were "down the shore" and people would ask where and we would say the shore of "Central New Jersey" and then name the town .
