I just got a promotion today that will have me working in Basking Ridge, NJ. We currently live in Tampa and were originally looking into moving to PA. It looks like we can still live in the Easton area, but know nothing about it. We will need to rent a 2 bedroom apartment that allows small (25lb) dogs). Where are some good neighborhoods where we can rent and the kids can go to a good school? How would the commute be? Are we better off in PA? Can we live in NJ without spending more than say $1200 in rent? Are there decent areas in NJ where we can rent without getting raked over the coals?
Easton Pa to Basking Ridge NJ is a 1.5 hour ride during commuter hours.
Two bedroom apt in NJ for $1,200 is kind of tough without a long NJ commute. You are probably better of in PA but you will have to tolerate the commute.
I do have a nice home for sale 20 min. from Basking Ridge but I am afraid it would cost you a lot more than $1,200 a month.

After a little bit of research I found a few apartments in Plainsboro and South River. I have also heard a lot about Franklin Township, but had trouble finding apartment listings for that town. Any other suggestions? I don't mind commuting an hour or so and $1300 or so for rent seems to be our mark.
$1300/mo in South River I can believe- but $1300/mo in Plainsboro I find impossible unless the place is a total dump. Plainsboro is a fairly high-end community, whereas South River is an older, blue-collar neighborhood. South River will be an easy hour away from Basking Ridge, more like 1.5 plus if you commute during typical rush hour times (7am-9am, 4:30-6:30 pm). Plainsboro would be a minimum 1.5, more like 2 plus during rush hour. If there's an accident on 287 or rain/snow, you could be pushing the 3 hour mark easily.

Spongedaddy, unfortunately Basking Ridge is located right in the center of some of the most expensive NJ communities. You are going to have to settle for a lower income area to find rent in your price range or you are going to have to put up with a long commute. Those areas that Bob mentioned are just not real easy to get to from Basking Ridge. You could try Dunellen, Piscataway, Middlesex NJ where you might find something in your price range and all three are about 30 min. from Basking ridge even with traffic. There are local roads to those towns without driving the Interstates.
Good luck,
E
BTW Franklin Twp is not real desireable for schools.

Thanks. It is hard moving without seeing where you are going. We are leaning towards trying to stay with the in-laws for a few weeks to get an idea of what's what.
You can rent in Basking Ridge for about 1400+ a month. That would be a one bedroom condo. If you can go higher in rent you can probably find a 2 bedroom closer to 2,000 (condo). Pets would be between you and the landlord. There are apartments in New Providence, which is about 20 minutes from Basking Ridge. The apartments are not as nice as condos but they are probably lower in price for a 2 bedroom rental. The town is very nice, very safe, and the schools are good.
Rest assured it is a beautiful area to live and to work. Up until a year ago, we used to rent out a 2 br townhouse at Society Hill for $1800 a month. I think you may find some still around this range based on the location in the complex.
