Go to greatschools.net if you have kids and do some research first. You can see how each school scores out of ten, test results, number of children to each class, ethnicity of students, parent reviews and so on. You can even map exactly where the school you are looking at is located. Newark and Paterson schools score very badly on the whole, as do quite a few other areas of Jersey. Hawthorne scores very well and is a cute little town, with transit to NYC (njtransit.com). Clifton is affordable with good schools, and a great town center. Good luck in your search.
