You are going to not want to share the road with NYC commuters every day. That means:
1. Living on a train line into Hoboken, light rail to Jersey City
2. Living somewhere you can easily drive to the edge of the PATH or light rail and then taking that to Jersey City
3. Living in eastern Bergen County and then commuting down 9W/River Road
4. Living on a train into Newark PENN station, PATH to Jersey City
Which while it sounds restrictive leaves you spoiled for choice as long as you are willing to go to the higher end of your budget and buy an older home. Cresskill and Millburn are both great choices for your needs so whoever has been helping you has been doing a good job (or if you found them yourselves, you've done your own due diligence well).
Thank you very much for the information. Train map is really useful for me in exploring the towns along the guidelines you suggested.
