I live in Middlesex County and I don't know of any good Italian bakeries around me. Does anyone know of any good Italian bakeries in Northern Jersey (when you include Middlesex County). I know Calandra's is in the Newark area. Does anyone know of other good Italian bakeries?

A bit of a ride from Middlesex, but Rispoli in Ridgefield.

Randazzo's, in Raritan, is worth the drive from Middlesex County.

I like Aromi DiNapoli in Nutley.

They have great pastries.

That's a hike from Middlesex though. I wouldn't drive up there for canolis unless I was already up there.

I would imagine there's something closer that's decent. This is NJ after all.

Conca D'Oro in Union is worth a shot, although I generally prefer Calandra's in Newark over it. For whatever reason, while you can get top notch pizza and other Italian food in NJ that pretty much rivals what you'd get in the city (NNJ might have the edge for pizza as there just aren't as many bad pizza places here than there are in the city these days) the pastry scene isn't quite there. I just don't think there's enough of a market for it. Calandra's is the only place I've been where they at least push enough stuff out the door that their stock is relatively fresh. Everywhere else it can vary where you have something amazing once but go back in a few months and it's trash.

It's easy to see why, I get pizza all the time. There are 4 pizzerias between South Orange, Maplewood and Union that probably get my business at least once a week. I probably go to Calandra's for pastry twice a year. Around St. Joseph's Day and Thanksgiving. (For what it's worth, their fresh bread is really good too, so we always pick some up when we're picking up pastry).

As far as Carlos' in Hoboken (the Cake Boss place) that place has always been a tourist trap when I've tried to go and the stuff I've gotten there has never been that great.

East Hanover in Morris County is far from Middlesex County, but Sorrento's Bakery in East Hanover is wonderful. It is popular, because it's the only good bakery in my area.
