You’re also going to sit in horrendous traffic to get into the beach town on weekends. If I wanted to be close to the beach, I would look for a place within walking distance to a beach. It is easy to believe that a rental two blocks from the beach has to be more expensive than one and a town that is not near the beach, but it is not necessarily the case. My apartment on the Ocean City boardwalk was cheaper than an apartment in a crappy complex in Somers point would have been (which is the next town over the bridge)
In terms of culture, Cape May by far has the most. It is something of an artist enclave there, there are play houses, Victorian history, etc. It would put you very far from the mall, but not too far from supermarkets another things. The beach towns that are closest to malls and other sorts of civilization and relatively easy commmute to aphilly, are going to be around the Ocean City, Margate, Ventnor areas which are all within 20 minutes of malls and a lot of stores. Areas such as Barnegat are much lower year round population and further off the beaten path.
Cape May though is close to Rio Grande, which has been built up a lot over the past decade and has many big stores. It is a bit further out though, it is the southern most town in New Jersey. There are still a good number of people at the southern end of the state however with a lot of retirees, and home health aides will still be in demand.

Thanks ocngirl , the input from someone who has actually lived in the area is beyond helpful! I did see rentals online in Ocean/ Margate/ Ventnor in my price range , definitely giving me some options to research & aim for . Cape May sounds awesome, arts-wise. I recall my mom raving about it after her vacation there years ago. Looks like I have a springtime trip to plan!

Ive been to LBI in the summer and loved it though its crowded, I also went in the winter as my friends have a home and though it was cold. The beach and town had a quiet scary but serene feel to it. I enjoyed it and LBI is one of the reasons why I picked to move to NJ and began house hunting out here.

I like Tucketon. No, it doesn't have a beach, but it does have access to salt water, the bay, on Green Street. The nearest beaches are on LBI. LBI is very nice.

IMO: The Jersey Shore is unique in that I call it "The Jersey Shore Experience" during summer months with its (depending on which shore town one visits) boardwalks with food and fun.
It's quiet in the winter months but still NICE!

I think that's part of what makes us "Jersey Girls". There's a need to be near the sea. I go to the beach in winter. All seasons.
For me, it's a fifteen-minute drive. Some days I'll be out and just think of it and drive over to Long Branch and look at the ocean.

It is so peaceful. You should make a day trip to Asbury Park one day, even in the winter. Check out the boardwalk and Convention Hall (it should be open). It's becoming increasingly popular in the summer, pretty trendy and has been compared to the NJ equivalent of Brooklyn , but its actually one of my favorite beach towns and has been since a little before it resurge in popularity. It's unique and maintains a lot of history, you can tell the place has been through a lot of ups and downs, from beautiful old buildings like Convention Hall and icons like the Stone Pony to run down apartments or homes vs. the new oceanfront hotel and apartments they're building, the new Asbury Hotel, newer construction condos a block from the beach.
