Which place has the best odds of ever becoming decent? And which seem to be a total lost cause?
- East Orange
- City of Orange
- Irvington
- South Wards of Newark
- West Wards of Newark
My best guess is Orange probably has the best chance since it has an NJT stop. Orange seems to have the most nice subsections out of the bunch (like 7 Oaks) and borders more nice towns than the others (SoOrange, WeOrange, Montclair, Glen Ridge) so it can work to make itself more attractive to those priced out of those very close areas.
Sadly, I don't really see Irvington going anywhere. I can't really think of any redeeming qualities for it.

Certain sections of Newark have seen improvement, but I'm afraid the challenges our urban communities face are not going to be overcome not because of the people who live there, but because of self-serving politicians who care more about votes and power than doing the right thing.
High crime, bad public schools, and lack of investment in infrastructure has plagued our urban areas for far too long.
I agree that Newark is the best candidate for improvement, based on the continued development of new housing and the entry of new commercial tenants. Most people seem to be unaware that the world's largest "vertical" farm has been located in downtown Newark for a couple of years, and there are rumors that other, similar agricultural ventures may be moving-in also.
Most metropolitan hoods/ghettos are becoming nicer places, especially on the East and West coasts.
Gentrification is rampant, improvement of these areas is very active, and racial discrimination is at an all time low.
Even Camden has seen major improvement in the last 30 years.
The world in general is becoming a nicer place.
So you bought into the 2014 whitehouse claim, 'the world is a more tranquil place" ????????

If a drop in a record murder rate to a very high murder rate is someone's idea of improvement, it is not
And that 'everything is fine" attitude is the enemy of NJ inner cities, not the people who call out failing politicians. When one month went without a technical claim of murder in Newark in 45 years, corey booker's crew claimed he was a miracle worker for his accomplishment of reversing Newark's unbroken string of murder. Just before it peaked at about 2+ a week being killed.
Same with Obama who claimed the safest states have the strictest gun laws.
This polyanna propaganda to protect political careers guarantees nothing will ever be accomplished.
It is more of the same, improvements are there but the same elements still exist and the problems will continue to persist.
Take NYC, even with the gentrification in the most extreme way doesn't solve all of the crime. Rapes, muggings, and burglaries continue in NYC and many stats are unreported. People aren't walking out like it is crime free in NYC.
The problems with the area is still the same nests same problem, no intervention. Now that Amazon is out of the way it will be more of the same. Where the same crime, drugs, shootings, car jackings, and theft will continue to perpetuate in the vicinity.

Crime rates in NYC have dropped across the board at high rates.
That's what the NYPD like you to believe. The newspaper has enough crime blotter than the stats suggests. Violent crime is down but robberies, muggings, rapes, all continue in NYC.
