The tunnel will cost billions to build. This sounds like yet another round of chump change that will be wasted on paying off political favors.

Well, it’s federal and IF there are going to be political payoffs and favors anyway, I’d rather have them stay in NY and NJ than migrate to other areas of the country. The tri state area pays far more than our fair share to Uncle Sam.

Another underestimated infrastructure project intentionally underestimated to make actual cost seem palatable to taxpayers.

Lessons not learned from boston big dig and CA light rail abandoned after extreme underestimate time cost and promised deliverables.

CC shut down the tunnel because of cost overruns and the typical fraud that accompanies such projects supposedly overseen by inept government officials

So it is ground hog day all over again for nj taxpayers.

The alternative is to wait for those hundred year old tunnels to crack, collapse, massive casaulties that will result in a trillion dollar damage to the economy

The funding is never the issue. It’s NJ’s gross mismanagement of funding that’s the problem. The government could’ve funded 100% of this project and the state would still find a way to say we ran out of money. As someone else said, I feel like the state just begs for money to start projects it has no intention of finishing just to pay off political cronies. NJ is a cesspool of corruption.

The advantage of that is the emergency will make them actually cut through the red tape, keep the graft to a minimum, and BUILD, the way they rebuilt the freeways after Loma Prieta.

Incidentally, that's not how the tunnels will fail. Instead, the bench walls will partially collapse, possibly causing a derailment and destroying the signalling system. Not so many casualties.

It has to be done and it will be done.

Right now, with both tunnels open, 20 trains per hour can move in and out of NY Penn. When one tunnel is down due to a disabled train or other problems, it goes down 6 trains per hour.

This happened to the train I was on last week. We sat outside the tunnel entrance with four trains ahead of us and could not move until three trains came out of Penn and through the tunnel into NJ because of a disabled train in one tunnel. Half an hour late. Train was on time up until that point.

That's probably why the Gateway Development Corporation was formed, so that it isn't under just the management of one state or entity. Of course, that can open a new can of worms trying to get NY, NJ, Amtrak, and the PA to work together, but again, that was the whole point of forming the GDC.
