Hello,
I have a leased Car and it is registered in New Jersey 18months ago as I used to stay in NJ, but I have moved to Delaware now and I am resident of Delaware (I have rental aptmt, my driving license and Insurance of Delaware State).

My Car is still registered for New Jersey and I wanted to know is it mandatory to move my registration to Delaware? This is a leased car with 18 more months remaining on it and the Documentation Fees that Delaware DMV told me to pay (4.25%) is approximately $1850. This is a very big amount for me to pay and also the vehicle I have is leased not owned. I needed some help and guidance on will it be ok to keep the Leased Vehicle as New Jersey registered (with my dirving license and insurance as Delaware resident).

$1850 one time charge is really big and I am not going to own the Car its leased so I dont want to be spending this big amount.
I want to stay legal and also I do visit my friend in New Jersey 3 times a week for work purpose as well.
I dont want to get in any insurance frauds, etc as well so I wanted to know what is my best way to get out of this situation of not paying $1850 to Delaware DMV on a Leased car.

I appreciate your help and guidance on this.

Thank you,

Instead of soliciting the opinions of random strangers on the internet--who have unknown expertise on this topic as well as unknown agendas--wouldn't it make more sense to address your question to the folks at Delaware's DMV?

That is a LOT of money just for paperwork. yikes.
I would say there is a legal rule that IF you go back and forth to NJ as a home state every so often maybe guessing 60 days, you could look it up, you would be legal still, meaning 100% legal.

Rather than relying on a "maybe guess" I advise the OP to get an authoritative verdict from the Delaware DMV.
