Cost for good nanny in NE Bergen County? (Jersey City, Hoboken: daycares, brokers)

Hi everyone,

We live in NE Bergen County and we're expecting a little one in mid-2021.

We've looked into daycares but are also considering nannies. We wanted to put our kid into a daycare because of the massive social development benefits, the baby having increased comfort with a greater number of people, the lower cost, and the stronger immune benefits. Of course, from what we hear from friends who have kids in daycare, the baby will be sick much more often than if we had a nanny.

I know there's a huge range in cost but does anyone have any idea what it would cost to get a good nanny 5 days a week at 8 hours a day? Also, how do we go about finding one? We're pretty new to the area and don't know many people.

I can't speak for NE Bergen specifically, but the going rate for a nanny here (Hoboken / Jersey City) is about $900/week for 1 child, +/- depending on experience. Obviously a lot of variables, but in the suburbs I suspect it could be slightly higher because I would assume the nanny would need a car, and there is probably a smaller pool to choose from than more urban areas.

I would start with town/mom facebook groups as sometimes people post when they need to give up their nanny. You could of course use a service like care dot com or the like, but may pay a premium for that. Around here there are actually nanny brokers as another option, but I suspect that may not be the case in the suburbs either. Sorry I can't be more helpful there - it is stressful trying to arrange for child care.
