Any suggestions on great Asian restaurants (Chinese or Japanese) in Northern or Central Jersey? It would be a plus if it had a private room. It's for my DH's 40th birthday party.
What about Chengdu 46? It's in Clifton - I haven't been there in a long time - I think they specialize in Szechuan which is normally spicy but I bet they adjust.
For central New Jersey, you can check out Sunny Palace on Route 18 in East Brunswick. They have at least two private rooms, but the rooms are fairly large, probably suitable only if you have at least 60 people. There always seems to be a wedding banquet going on there Saturday evenings, so you probably need to book far in advance if you want a Saturday evening.
I also attended a rehearsal dinner at Crown Palace in Middletown. Don't remember if they had a private room, but we were in a sectioned off corner of the restaurant and I thought the Chinese screens provided adequate privacy. I thought the food was good.

For malaysian/indonesian, the Penang in Rt. 1, Edison is great...there's also another Penang in Rt 10, in East Hanover. The staff is sorta snobby though and it's almost always crowded in weekends...
You guys are wonderful! This is for my DH's 40th B-Day. We actually live in NC now, where he has made some good friends but his overbearing mother is insistent that it be a family celebration. So I get to drag our children (most of them with special needs back to Jersey in a vehicle) for a umpteen hour drive. YEAH! I know it's going to kill me.
Anyway, DH loves, loves, loves, Chinese especially but any style Asian food will do. So we're going with a complete Asian theme. I wonder how long it will be before one of our children embarasses his mother.
Already it's been a tough year for us, but at the same time he's made some wonderful accomplishments, he's an awesome husband and terrific father so he deserves to be celebrated.
