I know. I spend time in Ontario and get responses in an exaggerated Jersey accent when I forget to say certain words the way non-Jersey people do.

They also have "hocks" in Pennsylvania.
I have heard several "dotters" (or... "daughter"... to non-PA residents) talk about the "hocks" in their area.

Haha.

Sometimes we put the "aw" into words where it doesn't belong, but sometimes others take the "aw" out, and it's confusing.

I was on the phone once with someone out in the midwest. She told me I needed to call Don because Don had the information I needed. I said, "Can you give me his phone number?" She said very haughtily, "Don is a woman, not a 'he'."

Apparently, Don was Dawn, but there was no way to tell that.

Likewise a friend of mine told of living out in western Pennsylvania for a few years. They made friends with the neighbors, a woman and her husband, Dell. They were invited over to celebrate Dell's birthday, so she bought a gift with a card, and they went.

After Dell opened his card, the woman told my friend, "You spelled his name wrong! His name isn't Dell, it's DELL. D A L E. Dell.

In the late '60s, as the Garden State Arts Center (now the PNC Arts Center) was nearing its opening day, Johnny Carson mentioned it several times on The Tonight Show. (In those days, he broadcast the show from NYC, prior to moving it to LA.)

Each time that Carson mentioned this venue, he stated that it was located in "Home Deal". Apparently, with his Iowa/Nebraska accent, one didn't pronounce the first "L" in Holmdel, and "del" is pronounced as "deal". Anyone looking on a map for "Home Deal" must have become very confused.
