Summit has train lines to Hoboken, Newark and NY Penn Station. Lakeland 78 bus to Port Authority is around 45 minutes. You can also go on I-78 to Jersey City. It has a very nice downtown area.
New Providence next to Summit is similar but for some trains, you'll have to transfer at Summit. 850k will get you way more house there. Downtown area has come up recently but it's small and not as nice as Summit.
Milburn is good too but 850k might not be enough.
I would forget Bergen county. I don't think it has good commute to Jersey City or downtown NY.
I'm sure you've thought through this already, but have you considered staying put for a bit? You have eons of time before you need to worry about school with a newborn. Hoboken has free pre-K, and it's pretty good. And the elementary schools are pretty good as well. Lots of young families and parks, and you obviously know about the commuter benefits.
$850K would get you into a 2/2, probably not in the Hudson Tea/Maxwell/Shipyard quadrant but in most other areas of town. It seems based on your post that you enjoy most other aspects of the town, so why add a frustrating suburban NJ commute until you absolutely have to?
If you're wanting 2,500 square feet and a big backyard, well that's a different story and you clearly won't get that in Hoboken.
