When will people say enough is enough. I know people want “good schools” etc etc. But that value trade off has been decreasing to other states. How can the residents continue to let their government levy this amount of tax on their property. Everyone talks about yet it continues on

Good schools are a by-product of good parenting. The schools, the teachers, the buildings and the resources are neutral. Those states, and localities, that have the "worst schools" have more irresponsible people living in them.

My taxes are $5200 and with the homestead rebate are $4800. If your taxes are high it's because your house is worth more, probably has more square ft., etc. It's like the insurance on a Cadillac is more than on a Camry. If you want lower taxes, downsize to a cheaper house.

It's more about the area, a lot of not so good looking homes still have to pay a lot of taxes due to the surrounding values.

This issue was largely resolved back in 2010 with the 2% cap. Property taxes are never going to decrease, but the growth has slowed to be just about the same as inflation.

New Jersey residents will begin to pay property taxes as low as the rest of the country as soon as they begin to govern themselves like the rest of the country, ie: consolidation of schools, emergency services, and public works functions on a county level. There's no "magic secret" to why other parts of the country pay lower property taxes than we do. Folks such as yourself love to use the nameless faceless "government" as a bogeyman to blame for your property tax woes, but in reality, you and the majority of New Jersey residents are to blame because when push comes to shove it is you who won't give up your local police department, it is you who won't give up your local school district, and it is you who will not give up your "local identity" and (perceived) "home rule." The prevailing trend in New Jersey municipal politics is that any local Mayor, Councilperson, or School Board Member who even mentions the idea of merger or consolidation in passing is swiftly and unceremoniously booted from office as soon as the election cycle will allow.

However, you're ignoring the fact that high property taxes and home values are correlated with good schools and low property taxes and home value are correlated with bad schools. You can argue about which came first, but the fact remains, no one with children in their right mind who has the means to do otherwise is going to move to a low performing district and send their kids there regardless of how good their parenting skills might be. We pay $9,800 per year in property taxes and our children attend a great small school where everyone knows each other. Our friends and neighbors are like-minded well educated people who instill the same values in their kids as we do in ours. You're not going to get that in a low property tax, low home value district.

Not just good parenting but educated parents who are able to spend time teaching and guiding their children. There are some great parents who don’t speak English, are illiterate and work long hours. I think it’s more accurate to say that good students are the product of well educated parents who are committed and able to be involved in their children’s education. If the parent is unable then the school community (teachers, other students, administration) have to do the heavy lifting.

The politicians keep trying to increase it. We only missed it this time because Murphy and Sweeney hate each other.
