I'm adamantly & almost universally opposed to privatization of gov't services.
But in the case of the MVC, it's simply a matter of caseload.
Too many drivers/vehicles in NJ.
It's long past time to let outside entities process MV transactions, as is done in other states.

Can you imagine being able to walk in to an AAA office to renew your license ?
No lines, no muss, no fuss... just like getting a passport photo.

It's technically almost privatized except for the information, they're keeping it on aging old systems. The reason why it takes that long because they have to manually type in the data.
When you buy a new car, the dealer inputs all your data and prints it out and have someone run to the MVC to handle the processing of the data. There is such a huge backlog, I wonder how long it will take for a dealer to get all their titles and plates done.

There could be over a thousand cars to process per dealership. They could've done this all electronically since there is a website where the dealer uploads buyer data and prints out the temp registration and temp plate. They could've automate everything and mailed the stuff but because of the outdated systems they have to run to the MVC to collect the stuff in person.

In the future, there should no need for physical plates or registration. It should all be a digital device onboard your car and you simply go online to renew your registration like your train. passes. And plates could be replaced with digital LED like on buses.
