Hi! We are a couple are thinking about moving to Jersey from NYC. This would not be until next year but we want to make sure we haven't missed any towns or areas.
Where are you coming from? We are moving from upper Manhattan
Why are you moving? To buy a house, have more space, and within a few years start a family.
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? He will be working in downtown NYC, near City Hall. I currently work in the Bronx, but by then might be a full time student and looking for a different job.
Will you buy or rent? Buy.
What is your budget ? 400,000 - 600,000 would be most comfortable. We could stretch it to 700,000 if necessary but would obviously prefer to keep it lower.
What kind of place are you looking for ? A separated house (no condos, would prefer to avoid townhouses) with a yard. Does not have to be huge, we are used to living in a 600sq ft one bedroom apartment.
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? It will be the two of us, potential kids in the future, his mother may eventually move in as well.
Do you need/want good public schools? Good schools are a nice bonus, but we don't need the top schools in the country or anything.
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc) Liberal area, diversity would be a plus, close to shops/restaurants/cafes/downtown-like area, friendly neighbors/town-like vibe.
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc) 1) Commute to NYC via public transportation (he would like to keep it at an hour or under) 2) Walkability (we don't want to feel stuck in our houses unless we get in a car. Neighborhoods where we can take frequent, safe walks, and proximity to a walkable downtown area would be super nice_ 3) Neighborly (I'm hoping for somewhere friendly, with a real sense of community that we can get involved in. For reference we are in our thirties, mixed race, college educated, he is a lawyer and I am getting a master's degree).
I like Maplewood and South Orange, but think they might be too expensive? Is Montclair definitely too expensive? Is West Orange safe/nice area? Bloomfield also seems like it might be nice, but not as sure about the commute or what the town is like.
Any other suggestions? Thank you in advance to any response!!
Newark is a horrible ghetto. Disgusting, dirty, and dangerous. Broken down slums.
Why would someone purposely move to a bad place filled with murder, rape, and violent crimes when they can move to a nearby place like Lyndhurst, North Arlington, Clifton, etc. with almost none of that?

I wouldn’t waste time with South Orange, Maplewood & Montclair with that budget. It’s doable but it will be tough. West Orange is geographically between SOMA & Montclair, it’s doable at that budget and checks yours boxes. The Brookdale part of Bloomfield is very nice but it’s pretty expensive. Otherwise most of Bloomfield is ok.
