Hello There ! My kids bday is coming week...they are boys turning 9 and 5. Is there anything we can do which is OK during these times maybe a weekend getaway or a day trip...
-We don't want to go anywhere crowded and follow all social distancing requirements
- They hate sitting in car for long drives so it has to be within 2-3 hours of Somerset NJ
- They like water but its cold to be outdoors and do water activities :| .. And I dont think anything indoor with water is open?
- Any drive though places like holiday lights (it may still be early for lights next weekend?)
We need to get out of the house and do something special for the boys, pls suggest something which we can do safely. New in NJ, so don't know much...
Though not listed as events, Red Bank and Morristown also get decked out for the holidays and are generally nice towns to hang out in regardless of the season.
For some reason this post reminded me of my ex's family Thanksgiving story. On Thanksgiving, his father would pile him and his five siblings into the station wagon and drive them through a crap area of Paterson (they lived in Fair Lawn) and tell them to take a good look around and be thankful for what they had, saying, "See how good you got it?"

Just a thought.
Seriously? It's their birthday.
OP, you could go to Asbury Park even if it's cold. I think the Silverball Museum arcade is open and there's places to get food for kids and adults. If it's not too cold, they could play on the beach, too.

I second your suggestion. I LOVE the Silverball Museum and asked my daughter to take me there for my birthday a few years ago. I was in my fifties at the time, lol, but I was amazed at how many kids were there having a good time, given that pinball and the arcade games they have predate them by decades.

Great idea.
I need a getaway, too. Might head to ocean this weekend.

Looking forward to inputs.
Depending on the weather there is Bear Mountain or West Point ?
