The first thing we'd like to do with our new home is refinish the floors before we move in since that will be the most hassle free time to do it. We have a small two bedroom one bath ranch and the kitchen floor is linoleum, so based on the size of both bedrooms, the living room, the eat-in area of the kitchen, and the hallway connecting the living room bedrooms, I've come up with about 644 square feet, so let's call it 700 SF total. What would be the range I'm looking at? $3-5? I guess I should mention that this is Hunterdon County as well-I'm sure that will cause the price to be toward the high end
I think you're in the right range, depending on the condition of the existing floors, how much (if any) prep work is needed, and whether you're looking to stain the floors or just poly them. Budget high at $5/sf and hopefully it'll come in low- that's not a large job for most guys, but someone might be hungry and come in around $3.50-$4.00.
when we bought our last home in NJ we had hardwoods under the carpets in the 2 bedrooms and the large livingroom. we were charged $900--that was in 2004
I've had several recent quotes for my house and it's never been over $2.50 sq/ft. Haven't had it done yet...hard to get out of the house with 3 kids for 4 days.
One of the best jobs I've had done on a flip home came in at $1.75 and that was sanding, staining and two coats of varnish.

Here's another solution - try Mr. Sandless for floor refinishing. It will be about 40%-50% of the cost of traditional floor refinishing. Google Mr. Sandless and read up on their process. I had it done on my 50 year old solid oak floors in Moorestown and was pleased with the results.
The positives - cheaper, done in hours instead of days, no mess or dust. The negatives - don't expect perfect floors. If you have scratches their process 'hides' them rather than sanding them out. My floors were in pretty good shape but needed refinishing and I was willing to gamble. I was happy with the end result.
The floors will take on a 'wet' appearance when the coat is applied and might be a couple shades darker if you have oak or light colored floors. I have cherry furniture so it worked fine for me. They use a screen polishing machine with cleansers that get the floors very clean and polished, then they apply the finish. It doesn't smell and has a five guarantee against cracking or peeling. These are franchised so it is hit or miss with service and quality.
It can vary from $1.50/sq ft to $2.50/sq ft for laminate installation and $2/sq ft to $3.50/sq ft for hardwood floors.
