Buying a used car out of state and planning to register here in NJ. When is inspection to be done after registration?

In some other states, your first inspection is due only after 1 year after your registration. I understand that any vehicles newer than 1996 need to have inspection done every 2 years in NJ.

Trying to find out when is the inspection due after registration for out of state cars. Thanks

When your car is registered in NJ, usually you have 14 days to have it inspected and you are given a temp inspection paper to have car inspected. Inspection is free unless you failed more than once. It's a 10 min job tops.

Thanks. For some reason I can't find this information in NJMVC website

I assume I can do the inspection the same day registration is done

For passenger cars, meaning non commercial cars in NJ, the main item they check is that you don't have a "check engine" light on.
Usually after checking paperwork, license, reg, insurance they plug into your OBD2 port under your dashboard. If you have no problems beforehand, don't reset the OBD since it can take a while to get out of not ready status.

Mine wouldn't pass for quite a while until I found a snall gasket that one of the sensors plugs into was oinched. Thats all it was.
