Hello,
We are buying a house in Vernon (our dream home). My wife will be commuting (driving) to Fort Lee (Monday-Friday) I came across a thread here where a lot of people didn't recommend commuting from Vernon to NYC but is it really that bad? I'm assuming going to Fort Lee wouldn't be much different than driving into Manhattan. I commute to Hoboken for work but I go later in the afternoon and come back after 9pm.

What time does she need to be in Fort Lee? Commuting to Fort Lee is heading into the eye of the storm so to speak -- 95, Rt. 4, Rt. 80, Rt. 46, etc. -- all of them are converging at the GW Bridge...in Fort Lee! So, while she is getting off prior to the bridge, she's still has and is heading into a NYC commute.
23 South, to where? Doesn't matter, it's 80, 46, 287, 208, all of it...leads to the same place...Fort Lee.
So, what's the arrive and depart times?

If you're commuting during normal hours it will be a terrible commute. It's a little over an hour WITHOUT traffic. The people in the thread you read previously are correct. It will also be 100 miles a day on your car. You're basically dealing with all the NYC traffic and commuters without going to NYC.

It will be better than going into NYC for sure. On bad days, you can be stuck on the bridge for more than half an hour. then whatever traffic you encounter by going down FDR or west side hwy.
Learn the local routes and avoid 4, 46, 80, 95 once you get close to the bridge.

Vernon to Fort Lee is a horrible commute. If your wife leaves at 'regular' commuting time it could be 1.5hr each way if she is lucky and that depends where you are in Vernon and where she works in Fort Lee.

She would need to be in Fort Lee by 8:30am.
And our house is on 517 not far from drew mountain road.

We aren't worried about the mileage on the car. She is getting a new one (not lease). Her commute now is strictly public transportation and it takes her a little over an hour to get to work.

We know it's a long commute, but its gotta happen at least for a while until she can find a job closer. We love where we will be living. It really is our dream house. We have looked at many homes and this was the one. We are looking forward to closing soon and moving in.
I don't mind my commute even though it's also over an hour. I teach at Stevens Institute of Technology 3 nights a week. I need to be in Hoboken by 6pm. I don't think it will be that bad for me. Sometimes going to Stevens from where we live now (Bayside Queens) takes me 2 hours because I have to cut through queens and Manhattan then into NJ during rush hour.
She was perhaps thinking of taking two days off during the week and going in on weekends instead so she won't have to deal with as much traffic. She would just have to deal with the rush hour stuff for 3 days. Her job is pretty flexible with her hours as long as her work gets done.
We also thought it might be better for her to take the bus. The closest one seems to be on Lakeside Dr(unless there is a closer one I don't know about) about a 26 min drive away from our place, I know the bus sucks, but at least that way she could get more sleep in instead of having to focus on driving.
