First I find it weird how such a major river does not serve as the boundary for the county.
IMO, north of the Raritan River, it's 'Edison' county, and south is the real Middlesex.
In that case, what is Middlesex County, particularly the real part south of the Rarity?
Is it a suburb of NY, North Jersey, New Brunswick?
Is it METRO Trenton/Philly?

From the NJTP, south of New Brunswick it gets that feeling.
There are some vacant tracts adjacent to the Turnpike South of New Brunswick, but once you get past those vacant tracts, you will find that the bulk of the county is suburban, with areas that are filled with huge warehouses. Rural? Nope!
There's some river called the Rarely Tan,,, I think
