Short Hills has an excellent school system. Half hour to NYC and there's the Short Hills Mall (Livingston Mall is close by as well). The properties in Short Hills in some cases have fair sized lots.

Default Ridgewood

I concur that Ridgewood would be a fantastic location for you to move to. Excellent shopping/restaurants. Train station. Excellent high school. Houses with nice yard should be in your price range.

Ramsey also is a very nice town, lower taxes than Ridgewood, good school system, nice main street.

Glen Rock has good schools, nice housing, lower taxes.

For someone with your specifications, I believe that Bergen County is the area you are looking for, most have excellent commutability into NYC either by bus, car or train.
Morris county is more rural, with some beautiful villages and towns. I love Mendham, Chatham and the like, however you are limiting your commute to NYC to either a long car ride, or train only.

Sitck with northern NJ, your commute will be shorter than central/south Jersey, and you will be happier with the wealth of options for schools, shopping and restaurants.

West Windsor/Princeton is more than 35-40 minutes from Manhattan. AND there is virtually NO available parking at the train station: the waiting list is several years long.

Default Check out train schedules

before making your decision. www.njtransit.com is the website, I think.
Some towns, like Westfield, do NOT have a direct train connection to Manhattan. You have to change in Newark, or somewhere else. So if you are going to commute, plan carefully. I wouldn't personally live anywhere along Garden State Parkway. Not a fun drive. I-78, for example is a lot better.

Default bergen county

Anywhere in Bergen County. Try Cresskill, Tenafly, Old Tappan, Ho Ho Kus. These are mainly upper middle class towns with excellent schools and good locations to commute into the city. And you can get a decent house for 800K although it may not be a brand new house.

If you don't mind being an hour away from Penn or under an hour to NYC by ferry, look no further than eastern monmouth county. Hands down, the best place to live in NJ. Why? I live in Atlantic Highlands right in the northern shore area. I have a high speed ferry to Manhattan...about a 40 minute ride. I'm two miles from the ocean, 1/2 mile from the bay and one mile from the Chapel Hill area of Middletown which includes beautiful mtn biking/hiking trails and not to mention horse farms. We have it all, including the wonderfull town of Red Bank with awesome restaurants and night life. Look no further my friend, you won't be disappointed!
On a side note, the ferry is roughly $600/mo.

Even though i live in rahway (moved from brooklyn in 98) if i were you
i'd start in westfield and then compare the rest of the areas listed
They are all nice areas so you should have no problem finding a fit for you and your family
